Stereographs seen through the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Icbe2WSfw_Q" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stereoscope</a> offered such a convincing illusion of three-dimensional reality that some commentators, like the American doctor Oliver Wendell Holmes, suggested that “form is henceforth divorced from matter.” In his article entitled “<a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1859/06/the-stereoscope-and-the-stereograph/303361/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Stereoscope and the Stereograph</a>,” published in 1859, he went on to explain that “matter as a visible object is of no great use any longer, except as the mould on which form is shaped. Give us a few negatives of a thing worth seeing taken from different points of view, and that is all we want of it.”  This series of stereocards portraying the South African War, also known as the Boer War, informed viewers of world events while also offering a visual spectacle. These stereographs can be compared to other examples of war photography created earlier, like <a href="https://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/ftncnw/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Roger Fenton’s photographs of the Crimean War</a> from 1855, and later, during the <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3130">world wars of the twentieth century</a> or the <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3164">fight against apartheid</a> in South Africa. Title A name given to the resource United Farm Women of Alberta Cook Book Description An account of the resource The UFWA was created in 1915 as a women’s parallel to the United Farmers of Alberta. Nanci Langford’s Politics, Pitchforks and Pickle Jars notes that the first UFWA cookbook was produced in 1928 from recipes donated by members from across the province (xiv); with eight subsequent editions and many more printings, the book eventually sold over 125,000 copies (Driver, Culinary 1055-56). The foreword, by Mrs. Vera MacDonald of the Department of Agriculture’s Extension program, was new to this revised fifth edition. It refers to the housewife as an “artist, for the result of her work is a symphony of life in which all parts of her body, furnished with the foods needed for their functions, play together to produce the harmonious crescendo of ‘an abundant life.’” MacDonald also declares that “For the symphony of ‘Healthful Eating’ learn Canada’s Food Rules and, using them as a guide, serve well balanced meals every day.” This book is notable for including recipes from a variety of ethnic groups; it also contains multiple recipes for date squares, listed under such varied names as “Health Food” and “Matrimonial Cake.” Another noteworthy recipe is “Mock Chicken Salad,” made with diced cooked pork, readily available on Alberta farms. Title A name given to the resource United Farm Women of Manitoba Cook Book Description An account of the resource This volume demonstrates how cookbooks can provide insights into other cultural circumstances. In this case, the full-page advertisement for the telephone demonstrates the early incentives behind rural telephone installation; another advertisement promoted pumps that could turn well water into running water in the home. With regard to the recipes, most have only minimal instructions, a reminder that basic ingredient lists were more important than detailed directions when, for example, every stove was different. Folk measuring systems also hung on, particularly for butter, the firm texture of which made it most logical to dispense with cups and instead use analogies like “the size of an egg.” Perhaps unsurprisingly, this book was modeled after the United Farm Women of Alberta’s cookbook, published in 1928. The UFWM, however, was founded first: the Manitoba Grain Growers’ Association allowed females as associate members in 1912 (Goldsborough). They officially became the United Farm Women of Manitoba in 1918 (Bumstead 268). The owner of this copy also inserted advertising recipes—featuring in this case Nutty Club Gum Drops and Baker’s Chocolate—which she fastened to the book with a pin, a clever alternative to today’s staples. Title A name given to the resource The Way to a Man’s Heart Cook Book: A Collection of Recipes of Real Merit Description An account of the resource Featuring a plethora of brand-name foods, this cookbook is a snapshot of 1936 cookery. Recipes call for Eagle Brand or Borden’s condensed milk, Knox gelatin, Keen’s mustard, Sunkist oranges, Heinz ketchup and other sauces, Swans Down flour, Miracle yeast, Jell-O, Crisco, and Gillespie Maid, a local cereal produced by the Gillespie Grain Company from the 1920s to perhaps the late 1940s (Glenbow, “Oddments”). Food colouring was another novelty, recommend to dye the fruit in “Blushing Pear Salad,” for example. Another notable recipe is an inexpensive “Half-Pay Pudding,” and the book also includes a “Cocktails” page without alcohol. The advertisement for buying spices at the drug store illustrates a still-common practice in this period, and the book also includes an endorsement from a home economist encouraging the use of gas cooking in the home. Although Edmonton had natural gas as early as the 1920s (Atco Gas), the service was still relatively untried in this period. The Rebekah Lodge, which now admits both sexes, originated as the female auxiliary to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, allowing women to participate in the social and service components of the organization. In keeping with this service mandate, the book opens with a “Recipe for a Happy Day”: Take a little dash of cold water, A little leaven of prayer, A little bit of sunshine gold, Dissolved in morning air. Add to your meal some merriment, Add thought for kith and kin, And then as a prime ingredient Aplenty of work thrown in. Flavor it with the essence of love, And a little dash of play; Let the dear old Book, and a glance above Complete the well spent day. The title page also implies that good cooking is “The Way to a Man’s Heart.” Such additions and folk humour were common in community cookbooks, and would carry on in more recent publications like the Best of Bridge series from Calgary.
