Mossman (photographer) Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 1907 9.6 x 14.5 cm Q 115 S536 1907 Description An account of the resource Life in the Antarctic: Photographs by the Scottish Antarctic Expedition includes a prefatory note explaining that “the illustrations in this little book are all reproductions of genuine photographs from life, taken by the <a href="https://www.gla.ac.uk/myglasgow/library/files/special/exhibns/month/apr2004.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leader and Staff of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition</a>, during the voyage of the ‘Scotia,’ 1902-1904.” The note goes on to explain that the photographs “were taken under conditions of climate which make photography extremely difficult and often impossible” and “they are not touched up in any way.”  Life in the Antarctic was published by Gowans & Gray as part of their series of Gowans’s Nature Books, and was intended for a general audience. Title A name given to the resource The Royal Alexandra Cook Book Description An account of the resource Edmonton’s Ladies Hospital Aid, founded in 1898, paid the initial $8000 cost of opening the 25-bed Edmonton Public Hospital in 1900 (Infofile). The cornerstone was laid in 1910 for a replacement hospital, which opened in 1912. This new building, featured on the cover page, was constructed in the English Revival Style and designed by Edmonton architect Roland Lines (Herzog). It was named for Alexandra, the wife of Edward VII. Cookbooks have been a consistent fundraiser for the Ladies Aid (later renamed the Auxiliary): they produced the Royal Alexandra Book of Household Science around 1928 and another fundraising book in 1989–90. The recipes in this 1912 book are extremely compact: perhaps the editors tried to save space in order to include recipes from as many contributors as possible, or maybe they assumed an experienced readership, knowledgeable in the processes of Prairie cookery. This book also picked up extra revenue through advertisements, including what appears to be embedded advertising for Capital Flour, perhaps a product of the Regina-based Capital Flour and Feed. Title A name given to the resource Five Roses Cook Book Description An account of the resource The Lake of the Woods Milling Company, which produced Five Roses flour, was founded in 1887 in Quebec, but the company proudly celebrated its grain, “from the sun-flooded prairie lands of Western Canada.” The first edition of this book was published in 1913; this version, with its colour plates, is from 1915. Multiple printings and editions in both French and English ensured that the book, distributed for free, was available in nearly a million Canadian homes. Though belied by the handsome colour lithographs and aggressive exhortation to “Remember the Brand,” testimonials and contributed recipes gave the book the feel of the already well-established community cookbook. As Elizabeth Driver explains, such “participatory advertising cookbooks” created “a national repertoire of recipes, which was then disseminated to the population at large through the company’s marketing channels” (“Cookbooks as Primary” 266). The string to hang on a kitchen nail and this copy’s messy annotations (including adding eggs back into an eggless recipe) speak to its human uses. The book also celebrates the flour’s purported “hygienic” quality, as the Victorian emphasis on cleanliness evolved into early twentieth-century germ consciousness. Five Roses grain was supposedly more sanitary and kept longer, as it was “cleaned, scoured, ground gradually by modern process, bolted many times through silk, packed automatically into absolutely new full-weight bags and barrels.” The book declared, “Five Roses comes to particular housewives immaculate, untouched by human hands. Title A name given to the resource Laura's Recipes Description An account of the resource Laura Lindsay (1914–88) was a popular Edmonton television personality. Her homemaker’s show aired live five days a week on the Sunwapta Broadcasting Corporation’s CFRN (now CTV). Her real name was in fact Laura Banks, and her son Tommy Banks would eventually become an acclaimed pianist, television host, and senator (Aubrey 198). In addition to recipes ranging from traditional “Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding” to trendy “Gumdrop Cake” and “Pink Pickled Eggs” (coloured with beet juice), the cookbook also contains a ten-day diet regimen to make the reader “Feel ‘In the Pink.’” Its reduced portions emphasize proteins, fruits, and vegetables. The final page of the book also has instructions for a two-day “Blitz Diet” for quick slimming. Lindsay’s cookbook was sold unbound, designed to fit into a standard 8½ by 5½-inch binder (to which users’ own recipes might be added). The owner of this copy used a red “Trip Diary” binder. The book sold around 30,000 copies.
