This presentation album was created to commemorate a Canadian Pacific Railway investors' trip across Canada, and was published by Canadian photographic studio <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3154">William Notman & Son</a>. <br /><br />The album provides an example of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObveSq3cMkw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">albumen prints</a> created using the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnxT4WQsLLM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wet collodion process</a>. The photographers responsible for these images would have travelled across the landscapes pictured here carrying their supply of glass plate negatives and a full darkroom, due to the necessity of preparing and developing wet plates on location. Once the photographs were printed on albumen paper, they had to be individually pasted onto each page of the album.<br />
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Photographs like these ones played a role in shaping the ways that the Canadian West was imagined, and provide a good example of what photo historian Joan Schwartz calls "<a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/memory-and-identity">imagined geographies</a>." This album turns the spaces of Canada into an imagined place</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">—</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">and, for the specific purposes of this album</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">—</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">one that was intended to please investors in the railway. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As you consider the kind of “imagined geographies” that these photographs both build on and contribute to, consider additional <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/memory-and-identity/1900-to-1969/souvenir-books">souvenir albums</a> of the </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Western Canadian landscape included in this exhibition. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">What arguments do these photographs make and how do they encourage us to imagine and remember these places? <br /><br />This album forms part of the Prairie Roots Collection at Bruce Peel Special Collections, supported by the Prairie Roots Endowment Fund (gift of Ralph and Gay Young).</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This album was assembled by a man named R. C. W. Lett, who is described in the album’s pages as a “colonization agent” of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. The album thus makes visible and explicit the ways that photography was used as a tool of colonization. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The album also contains some surprises. Three loose photographs found among the album’s pages offer views of Mount Robson. Look closely. In each print, a man sits at an easel in the foreground, dwarfed by the size of the mountain while painting the scenery around him. Paint has also been applied to the surface of the photographs in an apparent effort to transform these documentary prints into </span><a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/works-of-art/1850-to-1900"><span style="font-weight: 400;">works of art</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.<br /></span></p>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Though these pictures are photographic and record actual spaces, the decisions that the photographers made in creating these views rely on artistic conventions for representing landscape, such as the conventions of the <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3052">picturesque</a> and the <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3147">sublime</a>. They therefore fit easily within fine art traditions. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">As you explore additional examples of landscape photographs included in this exhibition, you will notice many more photographs with similar compositions. </span>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As a founding member of </span><a href="https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/f64/hd_f64.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Group f/64</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, </span><a href="https://www.getty.edu/art/collection/artists/1582/ansel-adams-american-1902-1984/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ansel Adams</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">—</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">along with other members of the California-based group</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">—</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">used the camera’s smallest aperture (known as f/64) in order to create photographs with greater depth of field, keeping as much of the image in clear focus as possible. They also embraced the use of glossy </span><a href="https://www.nga.gov/research/online-editions/alfred-stieglitz-key-set/practices-and-processes/gelatin-silver-prints.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">silver gelatin prints</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, which called attention to the photographic nature of their images.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Only five hundred copies of this publication were published in 1938, and each copy featured silver gelatin prints tipped in (pasted in) on individual pages. The white space around each picture emphasizes the photograph’s status as a work of art that stands on its own. </span><span><br /><br /></span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xw5_qb71bXs" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Adams</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> was a leader in the nature conservation movement and is today among the best known landscape photographers of the twentieth century; </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sierra Nevada: The John Muir Trail</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> provides one example of Adams’s many publications</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">. <span>Compare Adams’s <a href="https://www.tate.org.uk/art/art-terms/s/sublime" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sublime</a> photographs of the American West to those captured almost a century earlier in</span><span> </span><span><em><a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3147">Geological Survey of California: The Yosemite Book</a></em>. </span> </span></p>

This souvenir book promoted travel on the Canadian Pacific Railway in the early-twentieth century by featuring <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3147">sublime landscapes</a> alongside modern conveniences like trains and luxury hotels (such as the CPR Banff Springs Hotel). <span style="font-weight: 400;">These views of Portree, Scotland, are reproduced by </span><a href="https://www.moma.org/collection/terms/collotype" target="_blank" rel="noopener">collotype</a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, a </span><a href="https://psap.library.illinois.edu/collection-id-guide/photomechanical" target="_blank" rel="noopener">photomechanical process</a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> developed in the mid-nineteenth century that allowed photographic negatives to be printed with ink on paper. </span>Collotypes<span style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;"> provided a way to print photographs within the pages of books alongside text, instead of pasting in individual photographs, but it was a laborious and expensive process.<br /><br />The photographs collected in <i>Views of Portree </i>provide a souvenir of this place and contribute to the “<a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/memory-and-identity">imagined geographies</a>” of Portree</span></span>—much like the album <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3056"><i>CPR 1887</i></a> contributes to the imagined geography of Canada. Notice, too, the similarities between these views of Portree and <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3052">Gilpin’s picturesque drawings</a> from a century earlier.<br /><br />This album is one of the many <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/memory-and-identity/1900-to-1969/souvenir-books">souvenir books</a> included in this exhibition.
