<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This album featuring photographs of the Canadian Rockies, Fraser River, and Yellowstone Park is a typical </span><a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/memory-and-identity/1900-to-1969/souvenir-books">souvenir album</a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that contributes to </span>“<a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/memory-and-identity"><span style="font-weight: 400;">imagined geographies</span></a>” <span style="font-weight: 400;">of a place, much like the album </span><em><a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3056">CPR 1887</a></em><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">. <br /><br /></span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">The album's <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObveSq3cMkw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">albumen prints</a>, </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">some of which were taken by <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3154">William Notman</a> & Son’s photographic studio</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">, were assembled between 1888 and 1914, and were pasted onto the album’s pages individually.</span> <span style="font-weight: 400;">These photographs likely circulated in other contexts as well, in other albums or as standalone pictures. </span></p>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">Though these pictures are photographic and record actual spaces, the decisions that the photographers made in creating these views rely on artistic conventions for representing landscape, such as the conventions of the <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3052">picturesque</a> and the <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3147">sublime</a>. They therefore fit easily within fine art traditions. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">As you explore additional examples of landscape photographs included in this exhibition, you will notice many more photographs with similar compositions. </span>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">These reprints of John Heartfield’s </span><a href="https://www.tate.org.uk/art/art-terms/p/photomontage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">photomontages</a> <span style="font-weight: 400;">show one way that photographs circulated political knowledge. Heartfield reused and remixed images printed in the German mainstream media in order to expose and critique Nazi propaganda. One example of this kind of print media can be found in </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">a <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3142">cigarette album</a></span> that celebrates Adolf Hitler’s life. </p>
<p>Some of <a href="https://www.getty.edu/art/exhibitions/heartfield/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Heartfield’s </span>photomontages</a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> were published in the left-wing workers’ magazine </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">(Workers Illustrated Newspaper, also known as </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">AIZ</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">) and some were reprinted and disseminated as posters. We can get a sense of the power that these photomontages may have held for contemporary viewers from Walter Benjamin's comment in his 1934 essay, "<a href="https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/benjamin/1970/author-producer.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Author as Producer</a>," that Heartfield's "<span>technique made book jackets into a political instrument."</span><br /><br />The prints housed in Bruce Peel Special Collections were reprinted in 1974 as collectors' items. Today, the photomontages are most often viewed as works of art, and Heartfield is often described as a <a href="https://www.tate.org.uk/art/art-terms/d/dada" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dada</a> artist. Another artist who took a similar approach by using printed media to critique mainstream culture was <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9E1cA3j_xY8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hannah Höch</a>. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This album of photographs records a "Northern Buffalo Hunt" in Alberta, as shown by a news clipping taped to the album's back cover and by the photographs, including one taken at the Embarras Airport in Northern Alberta. The album includes both black-and-white and colour photographs.<br /><br /><a href="https://blog.scienceandmediamuseum.org.uk/a-short-history-of-colour-photography/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Colour photography</a> was made practical in the twentieth century with the introduction of </span><a href="https://blog.scienceandmediamuseum.org.uk/autochromes-the-dawn-of-colour-photography/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">autochrome</a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and </span><a href="http://content.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1906503,00.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kodachrome film</a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, but printing in colour was still prohibitively expensive for families before the second half of the twentieth century. It was cheaper to print Kodachrome film as <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3159">slides</a>, which was one reason why family slideshows were popular in the middle of the twentieth century. <br /><br /></span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Though technological advancements such as the introduction of colour prints appear to offer a more realistic view of the world, it is important to recognize that the colours produced by photography are the result of chemical processes. These processes favour certain colours, and therefore <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d16LNHIEJzs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">certain skin tones</a>, leading to what art historian Sarah Lewis has called “<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/25/lens/sarah-lewis-racial-bias-photography.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the racial bias built into photography</a>.”</span></p>

Physical Atlas with Coloured Maps

<p>Jesse Beaufort Hurlbert was born in Canada to Loyalist parents. He became Professor of Natural Science at Victoria College in Toronto in 1841 (Neill 82). The long title of this book is <em>Physical Atlas with Coloured Maps Showing the Geographical Distribution of Plants Yielding Food; Climates; Flora; Soils; Regions of Summer Rains; Geological Formations and Hydrography of the Dominion of Canada</em>. Published in 1880, Hurlbert’s work opened with a preface expressing his frustration with misconceptions about Canada’s climate and fecundity. The Right Honourable W.E. Gladstone, he notes, called Canada, “Those huge ice-bound deserts of North America.” Other reports emphasized swamps, insects, and flooding. Hurlbert aimed to debunk these myths by showing “that the climates and productions of the Dominion are similar to those of the western central and north-western parts of Europe.” A fierce supporter of the young country, he argues that “the phrase ‘fertile belt’ is no more appropriate to any part of North America than it would be to Europe. It conveys an erroneous impression, giving the idea that there is only a narrow belt fit for agricultural purposes in comparison with the vast areas north of the 49th parallel.” Hurlbert’s maps may be optimistic (few farmers in northern Alberta grow maize and grapes, for example), but they reflect a Canadian’s early attempt to raise his country’s profile through food.</p>
