Title A name given to the resource Bread Baking Made Easy Description An account of the resource Rita Martin was invented in 1938 as a corporate character for Robin Hood flour, which by the time of this book’s publication was milled in Calgary, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, and Humberstone, Ontario. With a name equally pronounceable in English and French, Martin was one of the faces of Robin Hood until around 1970 (Cooke, “Getting” 209). Nathalie Cooke argues that such characters were crucial bridges between the product and the consumer, lending comfort to change and glamour to continuity. In the preface to Bread Baking Made Easy, the reader is told that “Robin Hood Flour is thoroughly dependable—it is tested hourly in our modernly equipped laboratories by fully qualified chemists who make certain the high dependable quality is uniform always” (qtd. in Cooke, “Getting” 201). The book’s images, however, are largely domestic, including the cover illustration of Rita Martin baking bread over the course of a day at home. Martin “exemplifies the requisite qualities of taste and authority” (Cooke, “Getting” 210). Robin Hood had other characters as well, including Speck, Claire Wallace, Evangeline Martin, and Robin Hood himself. Title A name given to the resource Robin Hood Flour Cook Book: Recipes by Mrs. Rorer Description An account of the resource Francis Atherton Bean, owner of the International Milling Company, purchased a Moose Jaw flour mill in 1908 and renamed it Saskatchewan Flour Mills. Of the company’s four flour brands, Robin Hood, marketed for domestic use, soon became an iconic symbol of Canadian baking. This book, which took over two years and ten thousand dollars to make, specifically promoted the “Robin Hood” flour icon, setting the company apart from rivals like Five Roses. With American artist L. Moen commissioned to do the illustrations, the result was an art-nouveau and prairie-milling revision of a medieval classic (Driver, “Historical”). The “seven beautiful three-color process plates,” according to the introduction, were the first example of this printing technique in a Canadian cookbook, suggesting that this publication preceded the 1915 Five Roses Cook Book. Philadelphia-based Sarah Tyson Rorer, a noted home economist, editor, and cookbook author, was commissioned to write the book, and Elizabeth Driver points out Rorer's American bias in the notable shortage of recipes for English and French-Canadian specialties such as baked goods made with dried fruit, butter or maple sugar tarts, and doughnuts and other fried treats (“Historical”). But, recognizing that cooks do not rely on published recipes alone, this book also allowed space for women to write in their own additions. In this copy, inscribed as “Belonging to Kate Isabel (Ramsey) Leversedge (1873–1944), used 1917—,” the owner has included recipes for “Rhubarb Preserve,” “Raisin Bread,” and “Muffins,” attributed to women who were likely friends and neighbours. Title A name given to the resource Recipes for Household Science Classes Description An account of the resource This provincial curriculum book, issued by the Saskatchewan government, was renamed Recipes for Home Economics Classes by 1926, anticipating the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Household Science’s similar change to the College of Home Economics in 1952 (“History of Household”). With the scientific aspect already well established, “Home Economics” may have suggested a more business-like approach to domestic life and an expansion beyond nutritional facts to include social information as well. The inscription indicates that the book belonged to Agnes Janzen, probably a Saskatchewan high school student. This textbook also reflects the well-established partnership of cookery and sewing in home economics classes: students are instructed in making an appropriate uniform for their class, including a towel, potholder, and floppy chef’s hat. The recipes take a clearly pedagogical approach, beginning with simple beverages and advancing to more complex dishes. In keeping with late-nineteenth– and early twentieth-century household science’s advances in deconstructing work patterns, this book breaks cooking and dishwashing, for example, into a list of instructions to be followed. Title A name given to the resource Saskatchewan Homemakers' Kitchens Description An account of the resource Dating from 1955, Saskatchewan’s Golden Jubilee, this book was produced by the Saskatchewan Homemakers’ Clubs. Founded in 1911 under the parentage of the University of Saskatchewan’s Extension Division, the organization was a key part of the province’s farm women movement (University of Saskatchewan Archives). Homemakers’ Clubs focused on education in domestic skills, as well as activist causes like improved health care for rural women. They were also affiliated with the Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada and the Associated Countrywomen of the World. They were replaced by the Saskatchewan Women’s Institutes in 1972 (Taylor). Handwritten and spiral-bound, the book was truly a collective community effort, with little editing aside from arrangement. Contributing clubs providing their own recipes and illustrations, which were not necessarily culturally accurate or appropriate, as with the recipe for “American Chop Suey,” featuring macaroni and a stereotyped portrait of an Asian man. But the recipes and illustrations reflected Prairie surroundings as well, as evident in the brands decorating the “Cowboy Casserole” recipe, or the sketch of a chicken on another page (although the recipe it accompanies uses only canned chicken soup).
