With a nature print, the specimen itself is used to make an impression so that, as with photography, there is an <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/what-is-photography">indexical</a> relationship between the object and its representation. This example, from 1890, shows that nature printing continued to be used well after the introduction of photographic technologies. Here, watercolour paints have been added to the prints. Nature printing could also be achieved photographically, a process that was popular in the early decades of photography. The British botanist <a href="https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/anna-atkins-cyanotypes-the-first-book-of-photographs.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anna Atkins</a> is well known for her prints (<a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3132">cyanotypes</a>) of botanical specimens. The visual notes it contains depend entirely on the artist's ability to not only record their observations, but to also remember what was seen through the microscope when they refocused on the page.  In 1839, <a href="https://www.getty.edu/art/collection/artists/1969/william-henry-fox-talbot-english-1800-1877/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">William Henry Fox Talbot</a> speculated on the application of photography to the microscope: <blockquote>The objects which the microscope unfolds to our view, curious and wonderful as they are, are often singularly complicated. The eye, indeed, many comprehend the whole which is presented to it in the field of view; but the powers of the pencil fail to express these minutiae of nature in their innumerable details. Title A name given to the resource A Colourful Wedding and a Happy Home Subject The topic of the resource Romance Description An account of the resource D. A. Azoh's romance pamphlet A Colourful Wedding and a Happy Home tells the fictional story of Jack and Rita. The narrator, Kelly, claims that Jack and Rita make the perfect couple and eagerly anticipates their wedding. When the wedding day arrives, Kelly describes the ceremonies as royal and colourful, where "both black and white, fat and slender hands couldn't help clapping." The presence of white people at the wedding suggests that racial equality remains central to Nigeria's vision of its modernity. The presence of an 'international' photographer and white people might also suggests the power of global (Western) influence on Nigerian modernity. Rita, an educated woman and 'lady typist,' also expresses the increasing importance of education for both men and women in modernizing Nigeria. Contrasted with the unhappy tale of uneducated Tom and educated Joan (which the narrator tells before describing Jack and Rita's wedding), Tom and Rita are an educational match and their wedding is a success. Without any transition from Tom and Rita's story, the last pages of the pamphlet dole out domestic advice (presumably aimed at women). "A Colourful Wedding" veers into self-help territory, listing "Essential Cleaning Equipment" and "Cooking Equipments" while teaching "Butter Making." The <a href="https://www.gallery.ca/photo-blog/collecting-cards-cartes-de-visite" target="_blank" rel="noopener">carte-de-visite</a> was introduced in the 1850s by French photographer André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri. Since Disdéri depended on the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnxT4WQsLLM&feature=emb_title" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wet collodion process</a> to create the portraits he sold at his Paris studio, exposing one plate required a significant amount of labour. An astute businessman, Disdéri came up with a new photographic format that would allow him to print eight full-length portraits with just one exposure by using a four-lens camera and sliding plate. The portraits were printed on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObveSq3cMkw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">albumen paper</a>, a type of light-sensitive paper made with a coating of egg whites that allowed for a smooth surface. After printing, the portraits were mounted on cardboard and cut to produce eight distinct portraits.  <a href="https://blog.scienceandmediamuseum.org.uk/find-out-when-a-photo-was-taken-identify-a-cabinet-card/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cabinet cards</a> are similar in format to cartes-de-visite, with an albumen print mounted on cardboard, but they are larger in size. This album brings together cartes-de-visite of scientists, mostly entomologists, and was collected as part of Bruce Peel Special Collection’s <a href="https://bpsc.library.ualberta.ca/collections/dr-ronald-b-madge-entomology-collection" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dr Ronald B. Madge Entomology Collection</a>. While photography can record an individual’s likeness and provide information about their identity, it also leads us to consider how the work of collecting photographs and organizing them into an album helps shape and communicate information about the identity of the album’s compiler.
