Wallihan (photographer) Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 1894 29.5 x 26.0 cm QL 706 W21 1890 Description An account of the resource Hoofs, Claws and Antlers of the Rocky Mountains by the Camera documents a trip through the Rocky Mountains, with an emphasis on the animals encountered (and hunted) along the way. The publication provides a good example of an early use of the <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3044">halftone process</a>, which allowed photographs to be easily printed side by side with text, bringing about what historian Gerry Beegan has called “the mass image.” In its approach to photographic illustration, this publication is firmly rooted in nineteenth-century practices. This can be seen in the photograph captioned “Mr. Wallihan and his Camera,” where Mr Wallihan stands next to a large camera mounted on an even larger tripod in order to illustrate the photographer’s care and expertise. The publisher’s note informs us of the “extreme difficulty of securing first-class negatives under these conditions,” where “the photographer was rarely able to obtain the most favorable position or sunlight advantage.” As a result, not all of the photographs published here are by Mr and Mrs Wallihan: “In order to make the collection of wild animals found in the Rocky Mountains more complete, it has been necessary to use several photographs obtained by others.” These notes, as well as an introduction entitled “How We Made the Photographs,” and a title that announces the camera’s authorship (“by the Camera”), present photography as a remarkable mode of representation that requires specialized knowledge. Title A name given to the resource Vitality through Planned Nutrition Description An account of the resource Adelle Davis was a notable American nutritionist and author of seven books on diet and nutrition. Her views, advocating unprocessed food and vitamin supplementation, were often controversial (Carstairs; McBean and Speckmann 1076). This textbook was written for high school students and recommended for the Alberta curriculum from 1946 to 1963. Its inscription—“16 Mar 50, Miss E. A. Hassie, g Ed”—suggests it was used by an education student. The contents reflect an obsession with vitamins, including the now-defunct vitamin P (citrin). The healthful properties of vitamins were first observed in the 1910s. By 1921, scientists had identified vitamins A, B, and C, and by 1940 they had a list of over forty; books, articles, and advertisements extolled their importance to readers (Apple 4). Industrial success, athletic prowess, and physical and social conformity (“healthiest people have the most fun”) are the ideals in this textbook. In addition to the “Touchdown for Wheat Germ” case study, the book recounts the (probably apocryphal) tale of Ellen B., who reversed the greying of her hair by taking B-complex vitamins. Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 1969 29.5 x 41 cm DT 763.6 A25 1969 folio Description An account of the resource The Fight against Apartheid! is, as its cover explains, “an album of exhibition photographs showing life under apartheid and depicting the struggle of the South African people for their liberation under the banner of the African National Congress.” The photographs gathered here call attention to the role of <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/circulate-knowledge/1900-to-1969">documentary photography</a> in political activism, and are related to the tradition of social documentary photographs published in twentieth-century magazines like <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3045">Life</a>. At the time of this album’s publication, apartheid was still a reality in South Africa, and the fight referenced in the title was an urgent one.  These photographs provide one example of photography's potential to prompt action by establishing a “<a href="https://vimeo.com/25369128" target="_blank" rel="noopener">civil contract</a>” (Azoulay) between the people photographed and the viewer. However, given that apartheid in South Africa continued well beyond the publication of these photographs, the album also points toward the limitations of documentary photography.  A related photograph, taken in 1976, is Sam Nzima’s “<a href="http://100photos.time.com/photos/sam-nzima-soweto-uprising" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Soweto Uprising</a>,” which is sometimes credited with bringing international attention to apartheid. Title A name given to the resource Rural School Lunches Description An account of the resource This book is a relic from a program to introduce hot lunch items in rural schools. The introduction notes that most children brought a cold lunch to school and ate it haphazardly throughout the day. “The average noon luncheon tends to promote disorder, indigestion, and general discomfort. ... [A]t present the usual way of taking food is a real menace to the manners, health and morals of the children.” Providing a hot lunch item, however, would educate children in proper food preparation and consumption. Students would bring their lunches every day as usual, while the teacher would prepare a hot dish as a demonstration to the class; for the remainder of the week, rotating committees of children would prepare the item as a supplement to the students’ normal meals. “This,” the author enthused, “adds greatly to the digestibility of the lunch and to the nutritive value of the food. It also tends to make school a more interesting place and a greater agency for the socialization of the child. This means that the child’s body is more comfortable and in better condition to resist cold and disease.” Recommended dishes included cocoa, cream soups, mashed potatoes, creamed vegetables, creamed fish, and welsh or tomato rarebit. The white sauce table featured here is standard in cookbooks from this period. The provinces cooperated to integrate metric units into the school system (Ganapathy). This revision of Recipes for Young Adults, produced by the Alberta Sugar Company for use in home economics classrooms, is part of that process. The marginalia, however, demonstrates Canadians’ frustration and stubbornness in adapting to the new measurements, and many Canadians continued to convert back to the old imperial system. Cooking, practiced at home with old equipment and recipes, is slow to adapt to new systems. The Metric Commission, set up to facilitate conversion to metric, was abolished in 1985 (“Population Affiliation Report”), and today most Canadian cookbooks use a hybrid of imperial and metric.
