<span style="font-weight: 400;">One significant new direction in my collection since </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">A History of Fish </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">debuted is my effort to collect books in less-common languages and from non-Western authors. This set, purchased from a bookseller in Japan, includes the complete fish section of the </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Wakan Sansai Zue </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">encyclopedia. Including non-Western titles in my collection reveals interesting ways that various cultures have viewed and classified fish. For example, these volumes divide fish into four main classes: “Fish in rivers and lakes with scales,” “Fish in estuaries and seas with scales,” “Fish in rivers and lakes without scales,” and “Fish in estuaries and seas without scales.”</span>

A Little Cook-Book for a Little Girl
Description
An account of the resource
Although this is an American cookbook, originating as a semi-literary series for <em>Good Housekeeping</em>, this particular copy belonged to Albertan Lilian Leversedge (1913–2001), perhaps the daughter of Anglican minister Walter Leversedge and his wife Kate Ramsey (<em>Hills of Hope</em> 121–27). Notably, the candy and dessert pages are well worn, while the recipe for broiled sardines is untouched. The handwritten recipe for maple fudge (containing no maple syrup, sugar, or extract) on the back page displays Leversedge’s juvenile hand, as well as the tendency for written-in recipes to be for desserts. The book includes early nods to prepared foods, including boxed gelatine and Baker’s brand chocolate, while “butter the size of a hickory nut” and “10 cents’ worth” of almonds might have meant little on the Canadian Prairies.

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Artists Iain and Ingrid Baxter formed the <a href="https://vancouverartinthesixties.com/essays/siting-the-banal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NE Thing Co</a> in 1966. The Company, which was incorporated under Canadian law, challenged the supposed divide between art and everyday life</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">—</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">and particularly everyday economic life</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">—</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">while also parodying the conventions of the corporate world. </span></p>
<p><a href="http://artistsbooksandmultiples.blogspot.com/2014/03/n-e-thing-co-portfolio-of-piles.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">A Portfolio of Piles</span></i></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> consists of 59 photographs of piles found around Vancouver. The photographs document what the NE Thing Co called “ACTs,” or “Aesthetically Claimed Things.” Claiming things, rather than making things, called attention to the artificial divide between art and life, while also trespassing across established boundaries. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The banality of the photographs further contributes to this challenge. Compare these images to examples of corporate photography in this exhibition, such as the </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3051">Otis Dump Cars pamphlet</a>, a <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3066">Report on Evaporation Data</a>, and an album of </span><a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3161">Sundry Photographs of the Lethbridge Brewing and Malting Co</a>, <span style="font-weight: 400;">as well as other examples of </span><a href="https://www.tate.org.uk/art/art-terms/c/conceptual-photography" target="_blank" rel="noopener">conceptual art</a>, <span style="font-weight: 400;">like Ed </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ruscha’s </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3171">Every Building on the Sunset Strip</a></span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">This plate from Harris’s </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Fishes of North America That Are Captured on Hook and Line</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (1898) features the Pumpkinseed Sunfish, a fish of personal significance to me. This species was one of the first fish I captured from a local pond and is largely responsible for my lifelong fascination with fish.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">In addition to the diversity of perspectives that non-Western books bring to my collection, the physical books themselves reveal differing characteristics of book-making around the world. These Japanese books are bound by punching holes through the boards and text block and then externally stitching the boards and text block together with a string. The pages themselves are made from a thin but supple type of paper folded in half with printed portions on only the outside, but not the inside, surfaces of the resulting folded leaf.</span>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The title page of </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">A System of Phrenology </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">boasts that the volume</span> <span style="font-weight: 400;">features “upward of one hundred engravings.” Photography had been discovered by the time the book was published, but the dominant processes of the time</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (the <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3125">daguerreotype</a> and the calotype) did not offer </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">an efficient or practical method of circulating knowledge alongside printed text. </span></p>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">The system of </span><a href="https://victorianweb.org/science/phrenology/intro.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">phrenology</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> described in this volume is closely related to the Victorian practice of physiognomy. Described today as pseudosciences, phrenology and </span><a href="https://blogs.getty.edu/iris/physiognomy-the-beautiful-pseudoscience/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">physiognomy</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> posited that an individual’s exterior features revealed aspects of their character.
