This fish was once so abundant in Northern Michigan that a town was renamed “Grayling” in its honour, and a commercial train line specialized in bringing folks “up north” to fish for the Grayling in Michigan streams. Unfortunately, by the 1930s, the Michigan Grayling was extirpated due to overfishing, habitat loss, and the introduction of non-native species. Title A name given to the resource Vegetable Cook Book Description An account of the resource Elizabeth Driver points out that this book was one of two major vegetable company cookbooks to come out of Manitoba in the pre-1950 period; the other was produced by the A.E. McKenzie Co. (Culinary 923). The author of the McFayden book, Katharine Middleton, was at that time a Home Economics editor at the Winnipeg Tribune, as well as a popular speaker, radio host, and author. Scientific approaches take precedence here, with emphasis on minerals, vitamins, and proper digestion, in keeping with Middleton’s systematic education, both at the University of Manitoba and the Kahler Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota (Driver, Culinary 976). The farm home was another market for trends in dietetics and technology. Indeed, this 1948 edition, a revision of the original 1941 book, contains new information about freezing vegetables. Though not all of the plants advertised are good for human consumption (mangels, for example, are generally used as animal feed), the variety of vegetables (and fruits), including muskmelons and colourful varieties of squash, points to a diversity now largely lost. Title A name given to the resource Victory Cook Book Description An account of the resource A recurring theme in wartime community cookbooks is the kitchen as home front. An ad for Eaton’s specifically celebrates “Soldiers of the Kitchen Front,” the women whose knowledge of nutrition and food preparation would help them nourish their families and keep up morale, while also conserving vital foods to support the soldiers’ victory overseas. Other advertisements, such as that for McGavin’s bread, instructed housewives on the fundamentals of nutrition. The company used Canada’s first Official Food Rules as a guide; these rules emerged in July 1942 as a response to the perceived need to maintain health during the strictures of wartime rationing (see Mosby). “Canada Approved” bread, available since 1942 and specifically endorsed in Canada’s Food Rules, refers to flour that is milled in such a way as to retain B vitamins (“Canada Approved Bread”). While the United States and Britain encouraged fortification of foods, the federal government’s Nutrition Services Division and the Canadian Council on Nutrition instead advocated for this alternative milling technique (Mosby 421). Vitamins are a recurring concern in the book, which exhorts the consumption of pork for its vitamin B content and notes the importance of “vitamin G,” now known as riboflavin. The book also gives instructions for how to clarify and deflavourize fat and use animal fats in place of butter or shortening, as well as advice for “stretching” small quantities of meat. It also includes a recipe for a “Supper Dish” from Mrs. A.P. McNab, the Lieutenant Governor’s wife. Mossman (photographer) Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 1907 9.6 x 14.5 cm Q 115 S536 1907 Description An account of the resource Life in the Antarctic: Photographs by the Scottish Antarctic Expedition includes a prefatory note explaining that “the illustrations in this little book are all reproductions of genuine photographs from life, taken by the <a href="https://www.gla.ac.uk/myglasgow/library/files/special/exhibns/month/apr2004.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leader and Staff of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition</a>, during the voyage of the ‘Scotia,’ 1902-1904.” The note goes on to explain that the photographs “were taken under conditions of climate which make photography extremely difficult and often impossible” and “they are not touched up in any way.”  Life in the Antarctic was published by Gowans & Gray as part of their series of Gowans’s Nature Books, and was intended for a general audience. Title A name given to the resource The Royal Alexandra Cook Book Description An account of the resource Edmonton’s Ladies Hospital Aid, founded in 1898, paid the initial $8000 cost of opening the 25-bed Edmonton Public Hospital in 1900 (Infofile). The cornerstone was laid in 1910 for a replacement hospital, which opened in 1912. This new building, featured on the cover page, was constructed in the English Revival Style and designed by Edmonton architect Roland Lines (Herzog). It was named for Alexandra, the wife of Edward VII. Cookbooks have been a consistent fundraiser for the Ladies Aid (later renamed the Auxiliary): they produced the Royal Alexandra Book of Household Science around 1928 and another fundraising book in 1989–90. The recipes in this 1912 book are extremely compact: perhaps the editors tried to save space in order to include recipes from as many contributors as possible, or maybe they assumed an experienced readership, knowledgeable in the processes of Prairie cookery. This book also picked up extra revenue through advertisements, including what appears to be embedded advertising for Capital Flour, perhaps a product of the Regina-based Capital Flour and Feed.
