Tobacco gets its own chapter in this reader, part of a series on “the great industries of the world.” This copy was once in the library at the Camrose Provincial Normal School. The book’s treatment of ethnicity and cultural differences is cavalier at best: in India, “farmers are black or dark brown” and have few wants. Though food might be a window into other cultures, it is often circumscribed by the opinions and politics of the place and period. But it is this very circumscription that makes food such an excellent marker of individual and social relations: the pineapple farm in Cuba is owned by an American, and an expansive railway system facilitates harvesting. The introduction to <em>How the World is Fed</em>, indeed, emphasizes progressive-era lessons in economics: “it is through commerce that food is carried all over the world, from the places where each kind can be raised the cheapest, and sold for money in exchange.”

Chinaka addresses readers worrying about all-important examinations. His self-help pamphlet, <em>How to Study and Pass Examinations</em>, shows that exams are not straightforward--the brightest students may score the worst and the dullest may score best. Instead, Chinaka argues that exams are like football, where practice, a cool head, and an understanding of exam tricks and techniques count more than raw intelligence. Most of Chinaka's 'tricks' ask readers to be neither under nor overconfident, to be sincerely interested in school material, and to read novels and newspapers. How to Study and Pass Examinations specifically recommends reading English materials in order to improve writing; mastery of English is the key to passing exams which are, in turn, the key to participating in high life modernity. The last half of the pamphlet devotes itself to examples of compositions (notably on citizenship, politics, and religion) and lists synonyms, proverbs, and possible composition topics. In addressing the modern anxieties of Nigerian students, Chinaka's pamphlet reveals the emphasis placed on Western-style education in 40s, 50s, and 60s Onitsha.

This reader, employed as a textbook in Alberta schools in the 1920s (“Alberta School”), creatively approaches geography lessons through the accessible medium of food. The author, James Chamberlain, writes, “The natural connecting link between the immediate surroundings and the outside world is the <em>present daily life of the home</em>,” a truism in a period when new modes of transportation made for faster and less expensive global trade. The Canadian reader might learn about the structures of communities and nations and the interdependence of individuals through topics as diverse as market gardening, fishing, rice, sugar, pasta, coffee and tea plantations, coconut and banana trees, dates, oranges, and nuts. Priorities and judgements of the period are clear in the book’s celebration of the scientific division of labour, as well as its separation of the “civilized” from the “uncivilized.” The discussion of restaurants is another reminder of an urbanizing landscape. This copy may have been used by a German-speaking student: she glosses “curdle” as <em>gerinnen</em> and translates “whey” as <em>molke</em> on the following page.
