The “Deutsch–englisches Wörter-Verzeichnis” (German–English Glossary) at the end of the book may have been especially helpful for items that the housewife might wish to order from the grocer. Despite being written in German, the book has an international flavour, with Russian, Italian, and even Chinese-inspired recipes. Though bears survive in only small numbers in Europe, and had not been spotted in Germany since the 1830s (Handwerk), “Roast Leg of Bear” appears in the cookbook—perhaps a nod to the Canadian wilderness? Title A name given to the resource A Portfolio of Piles Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 1968 24.2 x 16.5 cm TR 660 T44 Description An account of the resource Artists Iain and Ingrid Baxter formed the <a href="https://vancouverartinthesixties.com/essays/siting-the-banal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NE Thing Co</a> in 1966. The Company, which was incorporated under Canadian law, challenged the supposed divide between art and everyday life—and particularly everyday economic life—while also parodying the conventions of the corporate world.  <a href="http://artistsbooksandmultiples.blogspot.com/2014/03/n-e-thing-co-portfolio-of-piles.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A Portfolio of Piles</a> consists of 59 photographs of piles found around Vancouver. The photographs document what the NE Thing Co called “ACTs,” or “Aesthetically Claimed Things.” Claiming things, rather than making things, called attention to the artificial divide between art and life, while also trespassing across established boundaries.  The banality of the photographs further contributes to this challenge. Title A name given to the resource Canadian Cook Book Description An account of the resource Used as both a reference book and textbook in Alberta junior and senior high schools from 1940 to 1984 (“Alberta School”), the Canadian Cook Book, which started as a prescriptive textbook, eventually became a staple in Canadian households (Ferguson and Fraser). First published in 1923 by Nellie Pattinson, Director of Domestic Science at Toronto’s Central Technical School, it went into its twentieth printing in 1949; this copy is a third edition from 1925. Pattinson’s cookbook, the authority of which was confirmed by her affiliation with the school (Cooke, “Cookbooklets” 23), was a Canadian addition to the “rational school” of domestic science, which gained popularity with Fannie Farmer’s Boston Cooking-School Cook Book (1896). The rational school took a rigorous, orderly approach to cookery, with high standards for accurate measurements and instructions. Reflecting on the book in a 5 December 1942 article in Toronto’s Star Weekly, Jean Brodie noted that “The recipes for desserts and other sweet dishes call for less sugar than many American recipes—to suit the tastes of Canadians who do not like their foods as sweet or as rich as the folks who live ‘South of the border.’” Measurements used the Canadian 40-ounce (rather than 32-ounce) quarts, and flour was measured in keeping with Canadian milling practices (qtd. in Driver, “Cookbooks as Primary” 262). Even so, there are few dishes that we would recognize as distinctively Canadian among the recipes for “Boston Brown Bread,” “Kentucky Salad,” and “Chicken a la King.” There is a large section for invalid food, and another additional section for diabetic food, reinforcing the health emphasis of the text. After Pattinson’s death in 1953, the book was revised in several editions by Helen Wattie and Elinor Donaldson. The new editors included a chapter on “Regional Dishes,” which Elizabeth Driver calls “the first attempt by anyone to define regional cooking in a Canadian cookbook” (Culinary 621). Title A name given to the resource The Shamrock Cook Book Description An account of the resource Printed by the Calgary-based Western Printing & Lithographing Co., this particular edition is not included in Elizabeth Driver’s Culinary Landmarks; other 1915 editions were printed by S.A. Hynd Litho-Print Ltd. of Calgary (1043–44). P. Burns and Co. was established by Patrick Burns in Calgary in 1890, soon expanding to Edmonton and Vancouver as well. After the scandal of Upton Sinclair’s meat-packing exposé The Jungle (1906), this small cookbook emphasized the nutritional and sanitary quality of the Burns plants, particularly the “mammoth Calgary Packing-house,” open for inspection by consumers’ leagues and domestic science classes. It also points out that “The utmost care is taken in making our sausage—the kitchen is a model of cleanliness—all meat is Government Inspected meat.” Burns also ran a chain of retail stores, selling the Shamrock prestige brand, which encompassed meat, lard, butter, and eggs; Glendale Brand Fancy Creamery Butter; and Dominion brand, a lower-priced alternative. The recipe for “Escalloped Salmon” indicates that Burns also sold fish. While many of the recipes emphasize pork, Burns and Co. also declared that “The good red beef of Alberta—first cousin to ‘the Rare Roast Beef of Old England,’ is, after all, our great specialty.” This book followed traditional household manuals by including pithy and edifying quotes running across the top of the page. Another World War I-era Shamrock Cook Book featured two Irish characters, the tall and thin Shamrock, and short and stout Weaney (Driver, “Canadian Cookbooks” 34).
