<span style="font-weight: 400;">These photographs of Palmyra, Syria, are printed as glossy </span><a href="https://www.nga.gov/research/online-editions/alfred-stieglitz-key-set/practices-and-processes/gelatin-silver-prints.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">silver gelatin prints</a> <span style="font-weight: 400;">and were likely taken with a hand-held camera and </span><a href="https://blog.scienceandmediamuseum.org.uk/celluloid-and-photography-part-1-celluloid-as-a-substitute-for-glass/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">celluloid film</a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Despite this use of twentieth-century technologies, the photographs follow a tradition of travel photography dating back to at least the 1850s, when French writer <a href="https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/287194" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Maxime Du Camp</a> visited and photographed the sites in Egypt, Nubia, Palestine, and Syria. Like Du Camp’s earlier photographs, these <a href="https://hyperallergic.com/623729/the-getty-return-to-palmyra/?utm_campaign=daily&utm_content=20210223&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">photographs of Palmyra focus only on ancient sites</a>, leaving out any traces of the modern world that brought travellers and cameras to these sites. </span>

<p><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Papillons Europ</span></i><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">éens: Nocturnes, Crépusculaires, et Diurnes </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">demonstrates a method of recording specimens that predates photography: the </span><a href="https://herbariumworld.wordpress.com/2017/10/16/nature-printing-in-the-19th-century/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nature print</a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. With a </span>nature print<span style="font-weight: 400;">, the specimen itself is used to make an impression so that, as with photography, there is an </span><a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/what-is-photography">indexical</a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> relationship between the object and its representation. This example, from 1890, shows that nature printing continued to be used well after the introduction of photographic technologies. Here, </span>watercolour<span style="font-weight: 400;"> paints have been added to the prints.</span></p>
<p>Nature printing<span style="font-weight: 400;"> could also be achieved photographically, a process that was popular in the early decades of photography. The British botanist </span><a href="https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/anna-atkins-cyanotypes-the-first-book-of-photographs.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anna Atkins</a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is well known for her prints (<a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3132">cyanotypes</a>) of botanical specimens</span><span>. Atkins published her photographs in 1843 as <a href="https://nhm.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/view/BookReaderViewer/44NHM_INST/12190875980002081" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><i>Photographs of British Algae: cyanotype impressions</i></a>, and is today considered one of the first to produce a photographically-illustrated book. </span></p>

<p>Elizabeth Driver notes that this booklet must date from at least 1928, when the Border Canning Company of British Columbia opened a new plant in Edmonton (<em>Culinary</em> 1114). A thousand acres of land were leased and seeded to supply the new plant, which produced Royal City brand peas, a label for which is tucked into the cover of the book. The text emphasizes the freshness and quality of the Royal City peas, as well as their vitamin content, which the commercial canning process, the company declared, preserved better than the home process. The specification of different sizes and qualities of peas and the statement that “the Canadian label law protects the consumer” point to relatively new developments in Canadian food legislation. While the first food grading in Canada was the Canada Fruit Marks Act in 1901 (Ferguson and Fraser 5), federal regulations in early 1928 established the size and quality grading seen here (“Regulations”).</p>
