<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This series of postcards from the collection of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague provides a striking example of the transition from </span><a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/works-of-art/1900-to-1950">Pictorialism<span style="font-weight: 400;"> towards</span> straight photography</a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> among twentieth-century photographers. The postcards were issued in 1973 to accompany the exhibition <em>Personalities of Czech Photography</em>, and feature work by Czech photographers of the 1920s and 1930s such as </span><a href="http://tallisphotography.weebly.com/jindrich-styrsky.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jindrich Styrsky</a>, <a href="https://www.idnes.cz/kultura/vytvarne-umeni/jiri-jenicek-se-dockal-prvni-samostatne-vystavy.A010831_095623_vytvarneum_kne" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span>Jiří </span>Jeníček</a>, <a href="https://www.getty.edu/art/collection/artists/1717/jaromir-funke-czech-1896-1945/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jaromír Funke</a>, <a href="https://www.icp.org/browse/archive/constituents/jan-lauschmann?all/all/all/all/0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jan Lauschmann</a>, <a href="https://www.getty.edu/art/collection/artists/1645/jaroslav-rossler-czech-1902-1990/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jaroslav Rössler</a>, and <a href="https://www.getty.edu/art/collection/artists/1484/frantiek-drtikol-czech-1883-1961/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Frantisek Drtikol</a>. <br /><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />Many of these postcards offer unique perspectives by playing with the light, shadows, and geometric forms found in city streets. The city is familiar yet also made strange due to these unique perspectives, calling to mind <a href="https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/phsr/hd_phsr.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Surrealist photographers</a>, some of whom were inspired by French photographer <a href="https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/atgt/hd_atgt.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Eugène Atget</a>. </span></p>

Of particular note are two cartoons that represent photographers in the act of taking pictures, each one drawn in red at the centre of the page. One of these figures is a woman holding a handheld camera up to her face, while the other figure stands next to a camera mounted on a tripod. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Little is known about this album of photographs, but it is noteworthy that it includes photographs of Japanese Canadian families in Canadian internment camps during World War II. Unlike <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/circulate-knowledge/1900-to-1969">documentary photographs</a> taken by <a href="https://www.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/lang14.soc.ushist.intern/picturing-japanese-american-internment-dorothea-lange/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dorothea Lange of internment camps</a> in the United States during World War II, which were meant to record the conditions of the camps, these are family snapshots that were never intended to circulate publicly.<br /><br /></span><span style="font-weight: 400;">For more information about the treatment of Japanese Canadians during World War II, visit the <a href="https://humanrights.ca/story/japanese-canadian-internment-and-the-struggle-for-redress" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Canadian Museum for Human Rights.</a> <br /><br /></span></p>

An account of the resource
This album, with its <a href="https://bindings.lib.ua.edu/gallery/artnouveau.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Art Nouveau</a> cover design and faded photographs, was created during World War I. Given the presence of men in uniform on the album's pages, it is likely that the album belonged to a soldier. The album's casual snapshots suggest that they were made by someone who was less interested in aesthetics than in recording a moment in time. Notice, for example, the dark shape (possibly a finger in front of the lens) that sneaks into the scene at the top left of one of the photographs and the casual approach to composition that marks many of the images. For comparison, consider this album alongside the <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3135">Album with Pressed Flowers</a>, with its careful compositions and even horizon lines.

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This album of original photographs offers a view of India as seen through a </span><a href="https://archive.artic.edu/stieglitz/pictorialism/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pictorialist</a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> lens. The photographer, who was a visitor to India in 1900, plays with composition and focus to soften the appearance of the photographs, differentiating this album from the typical <a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/memory-and-identity/1900-to-1969/snapshot-albums">snapshot albums</a> that began to proliferate around this time. </span><span>Here, the romantic haze of the Pictorialist style contributes to the view of India circulated by this album. Another example of the Pictorialist approach can be found in Edward Curtis's </span><i><span><a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3155">The North American</a></span></i><a href="https://omeka.library.ualberta.ca/exhibits/show/photograpies/item/3155"> <em>Indian</em></a><em>,</em> which aimed to document the Indigenous peoples of North America in the early-twentieth century, and often did so through a hazy, romanticized lens.</p>
