Fake "self portrait" of Shakespeare in William Henry Ireland's forgery: Miscellaneous Papers and Legal Instruments Under the Hand and Seal of William Shakespeare (1796). Item #12.

Forgers, Fakers, and Publisher-Pirates is an exhibition that was on display at the University of Alberta's Bruce Peel Special Collections (September 2025 through March 2026) with an accompanying book/catalogue.

The rare books featured in the book/catalogue are numbered 1-85, and many of them were on display as part of the exhibition. Now that the exhibition has closed, these rare books can be viewed in one of the Peel library’s reading rooms by appointment. Many of them can also be viewed online (for free) thanks to our colleagues at the University of Alberta Library and at other libraries around the world. Find links to digitized books in this digital resource.

Bruce Peel Special Collections is typical of special collections and rare book libraries in North American universities in the twenty-first century, housing no more or less examples of forgery, fakery, and piracy than others.

If you find a dead link, please feel free to email us at bpsc@ualberta.ca so that we can help you get access to the digital book and correct this list.
