    Title

    McCleary at Fort Norman

    Subject

'McCleary. Fort Norman Man who was so badly frozen'

    Description

A portrait of a Fort Norman man, McCleary. Originally from Pittsburg, McCleary suffered from gangrene during a particularly long, hard and isolated winter and was forced to amputate his own toes with a jackknife. He survived alone for over four months, subsisting on just 25 pounds of flour mixed with snow.

This magic lantern slide has been hand-coloured, and is also available as a photo print in Miriam Green Ellis' photo album.
