Fort Chipewyan to Fort Smith
Miriam Green Ellis' next stop after Fort Mackay was Fort Chipewyan, where fellow traveller Bishop Grouard disembarked to visit the local First Nations community. Grouard had spent the first thirteen years of his missionary career (1862-1875) at Fort Chipewyan.
The river journey North of Fort Chipewyan passed through the Pelican Rapids near Fort Fitzgerald, and on to Fort Smith, home of not only the most northerly bank but also the most northerly horse in the Northwest Territories.
