Souvenir Books, 1900-1969
Souvenir books produced by professional photographers contributed to the ways that places were remembered and imagined. Many of the souvenir books in Bruce Peel Special Collections feature the Canadian Rockies, and provide a useful point of comparison to earlier photographs of the Rockies, allowing us to consider how the imagined geographies of this place were reinforced or challenged across decades and centuries.
A number of different methods were used to create these books. Some feature photographic prints pasted into the book, some include hand-coloured photographs, while others rely on photomechanical processes such as photogravure or the halftone process, or distribute photographs as slides.
